More information about rectifier diodes
The property of diodes is to allow current flowing in only one direction. In AC circuit diodes can be used as rectifiers. Once there is AC current on the input of a rectifier diode, so comes out pulsating DC current from the output of the diode. For optimum use of the DC current from the rectifier, the current should be smoothed additionally.
A rectifier diode is therefore so called the natural origin of diodes. In switching power supplies the "fast" version of rectifier diodes is used in contrast to the "slow" versions. The fast rectifier diodes can be quickly switched from conducting to the blocking state. The slower a diode can be switched, the longer can the current flow go through the rectifier. This time period is, however, also in a "slow" version only a few micro seconds.
The switching speed of each diode to on-state in the current flow direction is same.
Therefore, rectifier diodes are usually used within a circuit when AC needs to be transformed into direct current. It makes use of the characteristic of the diode functions similar as a valve. The resistance in direction of current flow of a rectifier or rectifier diode is very low, in the opposite direction almost completely isolated.
Depending on the applications with the rectifiers, there could be minor differences in term of the construction. Rectifier diodes, which are intended for use in power supplies, are equipped with comparatively large p-n junctions. Thus, significant higher forward current can be reached. Although the larger p-n junctions can cause longer reverse recovery time, this would be not significant due to the switching frequency of 50 Hz in the power supplies. For the applications with rectifier in high frequency range, the small p-n junctions should be chosen, since the characteristic lines could strongly deform at high frequencies with large p-n junctions.
R&D Electronics provides you a large selection of high quality rectifiers. The typical application fields for the rectifier diodes in disk-cells, which are similar to the complicated phase-controlled thyristors, are for example high power rectifiers, high power welding equipment, motor control, as well as drives and charging devices.
